Jiri Vala has been awarded an SFI Principal Investigator Award for research on "Naturally Fault Tolerant Quantum Information Processing: From Concepts to Media Devices and Algorithms". This is the only such award to be won by a researcher at N.U.I. Maynooth for 2011.

These prizes are awarded each year to the best masters students in theoretical physics in the Netherlands. This year has seen the addition of three new postgraduate students and one new postdoctoral scholar. Robert Ainsworth and Glen Burella based at NUIM have joined Joost Slingerland and Jiri Vala's groups. Ivan Rodriguez based at NUIM has also joined Joost Slingerland's group as a postdoctoral fellow. Olaf Smits has started working at DIAS as a postgraduate student under Werner Nahm's supervision and will be collaborating closely with Joost Slingerland's group.
