As has been pointed out here several times already, the use and threat of use of nuclear weapons is illegal under international law. The actual use of nuclear weapons would be an extremely serious crime against humanity, and anyone who in any way assists in the deployment and use of such weapons is complicit in this crime. Under the Nuremberg Principles, all citizens have an independent duty to prevent such crimes. By taking part in the citizens inspection at Volkel Air Base on the 18th of january 2003, i was thus only carrying out my duty to highlight and hopefully prevent potential complicity in crimes against humanity by the Netherlands and the United States of America. International law is and must be the same for everyone. It is obvious that the crime of deploying nuclear weapons does not depend on who carries it out. It is my conviction that every human being has the capacity for both the greatest good and the deepest depravity and evil -- we contain both the light of God and the darkness of Satan, to put it in theological terms. This is even more so for states. No state is intrinsically evil, or intrinsically good and trustworthy. The United States of America illustrates this very well. Whatever your view of previous US policies -- in my view it has been a force both for good and for evil -- the current administration has embarked on a policy of unprovoked aggression, contempt for international law -- as witnessed in Iraq -- and a declared willingness to use weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, wherever and whenever it suits them. To allow this administration to continue to have their hands on nuclear weapons is thus extremely dangerous, and it is a duty to disarm them -- and all weapons of mass destruction in all states. jonivar skullerud Balthasar Floriszstraat 26-2 1071 VD Amsterdam 4 juni 2003
