Doctoral Award

Doctoral Award
We are pleased to announce that on July 10 Glen Burella from Jiri Vala's group successfully defended his thesis, "Hecke-Type Structures, their Representations and Applications", and has been awarded the title of Doctor of Philosophy.
Recently Jiri Vala's group in NUI Maynooth has seen the addition of two new members. Graham Kells has taken a posdoctoral position and Úna Ní Ruairc has joined as a postgraduate student.
New Postdoctoral Fellow
Layla Hormozi has joined Joost Slingerland's group in N.U.I. Maynooth as a postdoctoral fellow under the Marie Curie Fellowship.
Jiri Vala has been awarded an SFI Principal Investigator
Award for research on "Naturally Fault Tolerant Quantum Information Processing: From Concepts to Media Devices and Algorithms".
This is the only such award to be won by a researcher at N.U.I. Maynooth for 2011.

SHELL Theoretical Physics Prizes
Postgraduate student at DIAS, Olaf Smits and Shanna Haaker, a collaborator of Joost Slingerland have both won a "SHELL Theoretical Physics
Stipend". These prizes are awarded each year to the best masters students in
theoretical physics in the Netherlands.

Recent paper featured in Viewpoint on Physics
A recent paper entitled "Interferometric signature of non-Abelian anyons" by
Waheb Bishara, Parsa Bonderson, Chetan Nayak, Kirill Shtengel, and J.K. Slingerland
which was published October 05, 2009 in Phys. Rev. B 80, 155303 has been featured in a viepoint
in "Physics", "Quasiparticles do the twist", Physics 2, 82 (2009), by Joel E. Moore.

This year has seen the addition of three new postgraduate students and one new postdoctoral scholar. Robert Ainsworth and Glen Burella based at NUIM have joined Joost Slingerland
and Jiri Vala's groups. Ivan Rodriguez based at NUIM has also joined Joost Slingerland's group as a postdoctoral fellow. Olaf Smits has started working at
DIAS as a postgraduate student under Werner Nahm's supervision and will be collaborating closely with Joost Slingerland's group. Glen Burella, based at NUIM has
joined Jiri Vala's group as a postgraduate student.
