Policies proposed by Jan Gehl* to improve the quality of urban life:

¨ Keep scale dense and low

¨ Turn car parks into public squares

¨ Encourage student living

¨ Honour the human scale

¨ Populate the core

¨ Reduce traffic and parking gradually

¨ Adapt the (city) townscape to changing seasons

¨ Convert streets into pedestrian thoroughfares

¨ Promote cycling as a major mode of transportation

 

*Jan Gehl is an architect and urban design consultant. He is a professor in Copenhagen and visiting professor in the universities of several other cities. He has advised the Mayors of London and New York and has worked in Australia on the use of open spaces.
